You can choose between coach transfers, dedicated cruise shuttle cans, taxis, or Uber. Some transfers will include a stopover at tourist places like Windsor Castle and Stonehenge. The Southampton Cruise Port is also conveniently located to London, with the port located 80 miles southwest of the city.

City Cruise Terminal Address

There is a wide choice of hotels within a short distance of Southampton's cruise terminals. The coach and Central railway station and a handful of hotels including the Novotel, Ibis and Holiday Inn hotels are around 15 minutes away on foot. Although you would need to be reasonably fit and travelling light to attempt this. The five cruise terminals are managed by Southampton Port Authority. It is they who decide which cruise ship will use which terminal, not the cruise companies. Only one cruise ship can occupy a terminal and the same cruise company doesn't always use the same terminal.

Where to stay depends on four main things – your budget, who you’re sailing with, how you’re getting to port and what terminal you’re departing from. Most hotels will get booked up very quickly in high season so as soon as you’ve booked your cruise, it’s best to start making reservations. As a general rule of thumb, the following cruise lines usually depart from/return to the terminals below – but there have been known to be exceptions. Toilets are available in both arrivals and the departure lounge. It’s worth knowing that none of the Southampton Cruise Terminal have an ATM (Cash machine), payphone or WiFi. Those wanting to make the journey on their own will want to take the train or bus to Salisbury, which can be a lengthy journey of about two hours and 30 minutes.

TRANSFERS WITH SIGHTSEEING

The four terminals are all modern or recently renovated, with plenty of facilities to keep you comfortable until it’s time to depart or your connection arrives. These public carparks are just a short taxi ride to the cruise terminals – some are even within walking distance. These barrier-controlled carparks can sometimes be reserved in advance and will have a Park Mark and CCTV and are one of the cheaper options. Port Southampton dock facilities for cruisers include car parking (short-term and long-term) and toilets.

OTHER CRUISE PORTS

Ascertaining the correct cruise terminal in Southampton also helps you find the best cruise parking that is closest to your ship’s berth. All cruise terminals provide ample seating for passengers in the embarkation/ticketing halls. City Cruise Terminal has 500 seats and Mayflower Terminal provides seating for 700 people. Taxis are readily available at Southampton International Airport, Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. The latter airports, however, are both such a distance away that it's far cheaper to pre-book a taxi beforehand.

Transatlantic voyages to the Caribbean (roundtrips or one-ways) are offered seasonally. Regular deals UK to the Caribbean are offered by P&O with fly-cruise packages that include flights from the UK to Barbados (ship departures from Bridgetown port). On April 20, 2015, the RCI-Royal Caribbean ship Anthem of the Seas was officially named in Southampton. The christening ceremony was led by the godmother Emma Wilby (British travel agent). On May 3, 2015, Cunard Line's 175th Anniversary Celebrations were held in the cruise port.

CRUISES FROM SOUTHAMPTON

The closest hotel to the QE Cruise Terminal is the Ennios Hotel, a former warehouse. There is long-term and short-term cruise parking close to this terminal. The terminal does not have public telephones or ATMs but there are full facilities in the Arrivals Lounge once you have checked in. Cruisers can pick up hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks from Ceanos Snack Bar which operates in the Arrivals Lounge and the First Floor Departures Lounge when ships are in dock. Southampton cruise terminals are arranged around the point of land at the confluence of the River Itchen and the River Test. They then become known as Southampton Water which flows into the Solent about 5 miles further south.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

There is a bus option as well, but this can take up to an hour; however, the bus is cheaper at just $3. If you arrive by train to Southampton Central, you will likely want to take a taxi to the QEII cruise terminal. There is a free bus service that runs between the train station and Town Quay, but you will still need to walk 20 minutes from Town Quay to the terminal. With luggage, it’s recommended to take a taxi, which can be found on either side of the train station. Those traveling by train should arrive at Southampton Central train station.

The train is operated by South Western Railway and Southern Service. The direct train from Waterloo to Southampton Central runs every 30 minutes with South Western Railway, and tickets cost $40-$100. Tickets should be pre-purchased and an early slot is recommended for day-of travel in case of delays.

In both cases there is plenty to do and Southampton can act as a perfect base to explore the Hampshire, the South of England and London. There are no direct train services from Heathrow Airport to Southampton Central. Southampton has free shuttle buses that run from the cruise port to several different museums located in the city.

Hythe is your typical British seaside town and it’s definitely worth giving up a few hours of your day to enjoy. If you want to hire a car to see the wider area, there are a couple of car rental companies located on W Quay Rd, a few minutes’ walk west of the main port entrance. Most new cruise ships are being equipped with the ability to plug in, turning off their huge engines in port to reduce pollution. While you might arrive in Southampton by other means, you may wish to walk the last part of the journey on foot. Just remember that Southampton is not only a busy cruise port but also an industrial port. While most travelers will simply arrive in Southampton to board or disembark their cruise ship, Southampton has a rich history.

The Port Authority determine which ships dock at which terminal and this is how the other four terminals operate. We offer a range of hotels convenient for all of Southampton cruise terminals on our Southampton hotels page. The Leonardo, Moxy and Premier Inn West Quay are popular hotels just a short distance beyond the Holiday Inn. We have a comprehensive guide to all hotels in the city centre and close to the port on our Southampton hotels page. The Queen Elizabeth cruise terminal is like the Ocean cruise terminal in the Eastern Docks, but far from the port gate opposite the old town of Southampton.

Most often, Southampton is used as an embarkation port rather than a port of call on an itinerary. Because of this, it’s very easy to combine your cruise with a land-based trip to the UK. You should also consider spending a few days in London before or after your cruise, especially those traveling internationally. Taxis and Ubers are readily available at the Port of Southampton, even early in the mornings.

Extending your stay in Southampton either before or after your cruise can make a more relaxing start or end to your holiday too which means you can also explore more of the area. Car parking for cruisers in Southampton fall into the following categories. You can also visit Southampton’s old walls, which wrap around the city. These were originally built to protect the town from attacks by the sea. Most of the wall is still standing, which provides beautiful views of the sea throughout Southampton.
